Did you know that you can change your mind?

Updated: Feb 16

Sometimes you’ll make a decision, and then at some point down the line you’ll consider changing your mind. When is this a good idea?

Oftentimes we’re taught to view changing your mind as a bad thing - like once you’ve made a decision you should stick to it. But what if something changes? Ignoring new data and refusing to ever change your mind on principle is, like most absolute rules, not a great idea.

If you’re feeling friction, resistance, or self-judgement about changing your mind, here are a few questions you can ask yourself to help you make the decision:

Did you get new data? What has changed? What’s different between the time you first made this decision and now?

Is it fear that’s driving you to change your mind from what otherwise objectively seems like a good (but maybe less safe) option? Are you reconsidering your decision because you’re moving towards something, or away from a fear?

If you had to make the decision for the first time now, with all the data you currently have and no baggage of the previous decision, what would you decide?

If your answers tend to skew fear-based, or they’re driven by a lack of confidence in yourself, it might just be anxiety talking and your original decision might be fine the way it is. If, however, you’ve gotten new data, or the situation has changed, then don’t let the previous decision get in the way of you making the right choice now.

And if there’s a sticky decision you need help thinking through, book a coaching call with me and let’s talk it out!
